This is a great question, and one that many people have when they start working with a Long Beach architect. Whether they are considering a major home remodel, a ground-up custom home build, or a commercial project like a tenant improvement, they want to know how the design decisions we make at our architecture firm will impact their project’s cost. Most of our clients don’t have unlimited funds for their projects, and while some of them have more flexibility than others, pretty much all of them want a general idea of how much their project will cost before they get too deep into the process.
At our Long Beach architecture firm, we work with clients with all types of budgets, and as long as their budgets are reasonable for the size and scope of the projects they want to complete, we can design something that will fit within their stated budget. Because we’ve been designing structures in Long Beach for more than 20 years now, and also because we often work with our clients through their projects’ completion, we have a good idea of what things cost in the Long Beach area.
Of course, we aren’t able to give our clients an exact quote on their projects—that’s for a general contractor to supply—but we can typically give them a range that they can expect their building costs to fall into.
What About Working with a Design-Build Architecture Firm in Long Beach?
Some people choose to go with design-build firms to try to keep their project costs in line with their budgets. At design-build firms, you work with an architect and a builder who are both part of the same company. The idea with this type of firm is that the architect and the general contractor work together from the beginning of the project all the way through to its end, with both parties knowing the budget and working within it. A client doesn’t have to wait until the design is complete to start getting cost estimates. This is an attractive business model for a lot of people.
One of the downsides to the design-build model is that it removes competitive bidding from the process. A design-build company has no incentive to give the client the best possible price on the construction of their project because the client is already locked in to using their company’s general contractor. By getting multiple bids on the same design, like our clients are able to do, they can often save money—especially when general contractors know that the client is soliciting multiple bids.
At my Long Beach architecture firm, we have a list of local general contracting companies that we know and trust to do great work for our clients, but our clients are also welcome to get bids from other contractors. We encourage them to get multiple bids, and then we make ourselves available to help them choose the best option, should they want our help in this area.
Keeping costs in check can be a challenge—especially on large projects—but when you work with an experienced architecture firm that is familiar with the going rates for projects in their area, it can be a lot easier!
