Many people are big fans of IKEA furniture. Going to IKEA to shop for furniture is an experience all on its own. You can wander for hours to get ideas for decorating your home or office, get lunch at their café, and even have them watch your kids while you do so at some locations. Many small business owners—especially new business owners who our outfitting their first office—look to IKEA for office essentials like computer desks. They have a wide range of styles, including their popular European-style minimalist desks.
If you’re one of those business owners thinking about purchasing a minimalist desk from IKEA, here are a few important things to consider.
One of the “pros” of IKEA products, including the IKEA desks, is also one of the cons: they’re cheap. IKEA desks range in price, but many of their minimalist desks are typically less than $200. This is great if you’re on a tight budget, but like with most things in life, you get what you pay for. The most used material in IKEA furniture is particle board. Particle board is a product made from wood chips that are glued and pressed together. If particle board is exposed to water or moisture, it can expand and warp very easily. Though it tries to replicate the look of wood, particle board has a cheap look to it. It also typically contains formaldehyde gas, which the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has declared a probable carcinogen.
If you’re looking for a great desk for your home or office, consider this minimalist desk, designed and made by RLDH. It is made with high-quality Maple and Baltic birch core. All the materials used in their products are CARB compliant and contain no formaldehyde or any other harmful chemicals that you wouldn’t want in your home or office. Their desktops are finished with a durable UV coating that makes them easy to keep clean.
Even though the quality of an RLDH desk is much better than the typical IKEA desk, RLDH’s prices are still competitive—especially when you consider that many of their products ship for free within the United States.
IKEA is notorious for sending out products with missing parts, which is very inconvenient if you don’t live near a store and have to request that the missing parts be shipped to you. This can delay the time it takes to put your new desk to use by many days, or even weeks. Even if you do live near an IKEA store and can drive there to get the parts you need right away, it’s still a hassle. (Although you can get some of their delicious Swedish meatballs while you’re there.)
With the minimalist desk from RLDH, you only need two (included) bolts for each leg, which you secure with the included Allen wrench. The bolts ensure that every desk they sell is sturdy and durable. As a nice bonus, RLDH provides a cutout on the underside of the desk with a magnet, where you can store the Allen wrench until the time comes when you need to disassemble the desk to move it.
RLDH’s Desk A comes with an optional monitor riser that you can add to your purchase for a small additional charge. This is great for putting your computer monitor at eye level, and a typical computer keyboard nests nicely underneath the riser when not in use.
Desks from RLDH are built in the United States. Each desk is made to order, so you can expect your desk to arrive a few weeks after you purchase it, but it won’t be subject to any of the long delays that are common with items that made overseas.
