Michal Bohm, Owner of BM Windows in San Diego answers our questions about owning a replacement window and door business. He discusses how he started out in the industry, and the lessons he’s learned along the way.
What are the primary service(s) or product(s) that your business provides?
BM Windows is company that sells and installs premium vinyl windows and doors in San Diego. Our business stands out in a crowded market because we focus on customer service, as opposed to high pressure sales tactics.
Who’s your perfect customer? Do you work with other business (B2B), or consumers (B2C), or both?
Our customers are mostly homeowners looking to improve their current homes with more energy efficient or upgraded windows and doors. We do have some commercial customers as well. For example, we have worked with hotels and HOAs in the past.
When did you start your company? Share a little about your professional history leading up to starting your company.
I have worked in the window industry for more than 15 years. My first experience with the window business was in Germany when I was sent to a window manufacturing plant as an intern while studying at the Business Academy in Prague. I started BM Windows in San Diego in 2007. Today we have thousands of customers throughout San Diego county and we are growing every year.
What are one or two things that you’ve learned the hard way?
One thing I’ve learned in my years of business is that sometimes trying to save money can backfire if you do it in the wrong places. For example, we initially tried to save some money by taking our own pictures for our web gallery. The photos did not turn out well and did a disservice to our company. We ended up hiring a professional photographer to retake the pictures and our website and our company look much more professional as a result. Some things are worth spending extra money on.
What is one thing that most people don’t know about your business or industry that you wish they did?
Replacing old windows and doors for new energy efficient vinyl windows and doors will have many benefits for your life. You will beautify and modernize your home. You will also save money on your energy bills. You might be surprised how much of a difference new windows can make in your home. Window technology as come a long way in the last several years.
