Christmas. Birthdays. A business anniversary. There are many good reasons to give a gift to the solopreneur that you’re honored to call family or friend. The problem is, solo business owners and operators aren’t always easy to buy for. We tend to walk a different walk than everyone else. This sometimes makes it difficult to figure out what we’d like.
So, what do you get the solopreneur in your life when you want to give him or her a gift? Here are a few of the presents I’d love to unwrap that the solopreneur in your life might like too.
A New Laptop Bag
If there is one thing a lot of solopreneurs have in common is that we don’t like to buy ourselves new business stuff that we don’t absolutely need. For me, a laptop bag falls into this category. While I do work entirely online as a freelance health writer, I usually do it from home. The only time I use a laptop bag is when I travel, which hasn’t been a lot lately.
That said, I broke down and bought myself a new bag a few months ago. Every time I see it sitting in the corner of my office, I smile. Why? Because it represents the professional that I’ve become. And now, when I do go out with my computer, I can do so with my head held high.
It doesn’t necessarily have to be a laptop bag either. Take a look at your solopreneur’s business supplies and see if anything looks worn down. Chances are good that they’d like to replace something, but don’t because they can’t justify the cost.
A Business Book
When you own and operate your own business, you’re always looking for ways to do things better. You constantly search out advice from others who have been where you are and are doing well for themselves. You want to know what works and what doesn’t so you don’t have to figure everything out for yourself.
Help the solopreneur in your life by giving them a book that teaches them how to make their business bigger, stronger, and more profitable. There are a ton of them on Amazon, many with high reviews.
Just be sure to pick one that speaks more so to solopreneurs than owners of businesses that have employees. This involves avoiding books that talk about how to hire, fire, or train your staff. Instead, aim for books that share how to build a better business, how to use failure to succeed, and other basic business strategies and principles.
Inspiring Wall Décor
Spend any time with a solopreneur and you’ve likely heard them say that they’ve thought about giving up. I know I’ve had that thought more than a few times in my career, though I’m happy to say that I’ve never done it.
Sometimes we have to remind ourselves that our one-person business is worth it. That there is some reason that we are following our dreams and taking a career path that can feel incredibly difficult and lonely. In times like these, it’s nice to have a little inspiration on the office wall.
There is a multitude of plaques, pictures, and other types of wall art that goes with any style of home office. It’s available on hand-crafted décor sites like Etsy or you can go with a company that puts their favorite quote on canvas so they can hang it on their wall.
A New Coffee Mug
Okay, this may sound a little cheesy, but 44 percent of Americans drink 2-3 cups of coffee per day, with 24 percent reporting that they consume even more. I wouldn’t be surprised if solopreneurs are at the high end of this range, requiring more energy infusions that help them better handle whatever is thrown their way.
I don’t know about the solopreneur in your life, but I get sick of drinking out of the same mugs every day. Plus, when a mug is given to me by a family member or friend, I smile every time I get it out of the cupboard.
The type of coffee mug you give is dependent on the solopreneur. Personally, I love mugs with inspirational or funny quotes. But there are also mugs that change when a hot liquid is added, mugs that have profanities printed all over them, and mugs that look like anything but a mug. As long as it can hold coffee, your solopreneur is sure to love it.
Coffee Subscription
Speaking of coffee, why not add a coffee subscription to go with the new mug? While coffee lovers tend to have their favorite brand and flavor of coffee every morning, noon, and night, as solopreneurs, we typically aren’t afraid to try something new. Especially when it comes to something that will keep us awake and energized.
To be completely transparent, I’ve never subscribed to a coffee service. So, I’m going to have to rely on the experts for this one. According to The Strategist, an online shopping guide, the best subscription coffee clubs include Trade Coffee, Driftaway Coffee, and Atlas Coffee Club. Blue Bottle Coffee Subscription, Bean Box, MistoBox, Craft Coffee, and Crema also made the list.
A Massage Gift Certificate
Solopreneurs wear many hats. They are customer service, service provider, marketer, boss, and employee all in one. Over time, this equals stress. How do you reduce stress? With a relaxing massage.
Give your solopreneur the gift of letting things go, even if only for 60 minutes. Nothing says “I care” like a gift that is designed to shut your brain off for a short time while also soothing your tired body.
A massage offers other benefits as well. The Mayo Clinic shares that these include relief from headaches, digestive disorders, and anxiety. They’re also good for promoting a restful night’s sleep. All good things to give a busy solopreneur.
A Food Delivery Gift Card
Finally, because solopreneurs don’t get paid if they don’t work, it’s not uncommon for us to not stop for lunch. If we do, it’s often at our desk or designated workspace where we continue to tend to our business while scarfing down our food.
You can take the task of getting lunch off your solopreneur’s plate (see what I did there?) by giving them a gift card for their favorite food delivery. While we can absolutely get our meals ourselves, any day that we don’t have to is a good day. Plus, sometimes it’s just nice to enjoy a lunch that we didn’t have to make ourselves.
These are just a few gift ideas for the solopreneur in your life. No matter what you decide to get, it’s likely to be appreciated. Remember: we are used to doing everything on our own. So, when something is provided for us, it doesn’t go unnoticed.
