Kristy Romero is the owner of Inspirations Photography in Murrieta, California. Being in the photography is difficult these days. With the ready availability of digital cameras, the industry is crowded with individuals and businesses vying for the same customers. Kristy’s focus on quality and investing in her business has helped her stand out from the crowd.
What are the primary service(s) or product(s) that your business provides?
Inspirations Photography specializes in portrait photography, specifically maternity, newborn and baby. My business also offers high quality print products and digital images to my customers.
Who’s your perfect customer? Do you work with other business (B2B), or consumers (B2C), or both?
My perfect customers are families interested in documenting their children’s milestones, who value prints and are looking for a higher quality of work and products to cherish for generations. I also focus on finding those customers who want an established, qualified and professional photographer.
When did you start your company? Share a little about your professional history leading up to starting your company.
Before becoming a professional photographer, I was a preschool teacher. My first photography client was the school at which I taught. I officially started my photography business with a friend 10 years ago. We began as wedding photographers. However, I soon realized it was not the photography field I wanted to be in after we did our first newborn session together. The partnership with my friend dissolved within two years, and I opened Inspirations Photography so I could focus on what I was really passionate about–maternity, newborn and baby photography. My journey has taught me a lot about hard work and developing my art, and I continue to learn as a business owner. It’s a constant work in progress.
What are one or two things that you’ve learned the hard way?
Business. It’s not to be taken lightly. Whenever anyone reaches out to me to learn about photography, I tell them to learn business first. I’ve also learned that it can be a challenge to reach clients who value more than just a digital image. This industry is not about just owning a camera and some props. It is a huge investment and it can be a challenge to educate the public on how to search for a photographer who knows what they are doing.
What is one thing that most people don’t know about your business or industry that you wish they did?
I wish more people understood the hard work, and money poured into the equipment and props, that goes into creating one client’s image gallery. I also want them to recognize the difference a higher quality product can make, and to see the difference between a print from Walmart and a high quality print you will get from me. I am passionate about printing your images, and not keeping them on a disc or archiving them on a computer, where they could possibly be lost forever.
