Plan Everything the Day Before
Working from home is different from the office. Your workspace is only a few steps away from the bed and being in a familiar environment can make you slack off. For example, you can decide to sleep a little longer because your office isn’t far. But that is a recipe for disaster – bad habits are easy to establish and hard to get rid of. Therefore, don’t alter your schedule as you work from home.
Practice the same discipline you had when you had to go to the office. Before you sleep, devise a schedule of all the things you’ll do the next day.
Take Advantage of the Situation
Since you’re working from home, you can arrive at the workstation very early. If you find yourself awake before the alarm goes off, take advantage of the situation. Take a shower, eat breakfast, and get ready for work. When you start early, you’ll get most things done before midday.
Train your Mind
To get things done, treat your home office as an official office. Get up early, iron your clothes, put on a suit and tie, and get to work on time. That’s the only way you’re going to convince your mind to take things seriously. If you go to work in your pajamas, you’ll go back to bed before doing anything useful.
Have a Designated Workspace
It can be tempting to use the kitchen table as your office space or sit on the couch with your computer. After all, they’re merely furniture and what matters is what you have on your laptop. However, your brain doesn’t operate that way.
Your brain will associate that space with the leisure activities you do there. Although it’s possible to use the kitchen area as your workspace, you’ll only be focused on work during the first two or three hours, then after that, you’ll begin looking at the fridge and will think about making a snack for yourself. Before you know it, you’re in front of the television with your snack in hand watching your favorite show.
To avoid falling into this trap, select one room to be your office, and keep it off-limits from others. Add equipment such as an ergonomic chair and table to that room. Let all your office stuff stay in that room.
Be Flexible
Being in the same place every day and week can be monotonous. Even your home office can feel repetitive. To boost your energy levels, get out of the house, and go work somewhere else. Coffee houses and co-working spaces are excellent alternatives. You can also use the museum or library as your workspace. When you change the scenery, you break the boredom and regain your zeal for work.
Don’t Look at Social Media
Nobody will supervise you at home, so you’re responsible for all your actions. Therefore, before you start work, log out of all social media accounts and limit your distractions. It can be tempting to have a sneak peek of what’s happening when you’re bored, but once you do that, you’ll spend the next 30 minutes to 1-hour scrolling through your timeline and other people’s profiles.
You should also designate a particular time for reviewing emails. If you keep opening and closing your emails because you’re afraid of missing out on something, you won’t get much done.
Do More
It’s routine for people to underestimate their workload for the day. For example, you assume you’re going to finish a project in 1 hour only for it to take more than 3 hours. If you want to be successful working from home, commit to doing more.
Your to-do list should be long to encourage you to do a lot. You’ll be more efficient when you realize that you have a lot of things to do. You might not complete everything on the list, but you’ll get a lot of things done within a short time.
Working from home is convenient and flexible. You are in charge of everything you do, and you don’t have to worry about traffic snarl-ups, but there’s a downside. You’re in a familiar environment all the time, and it’s tempting to slack off. Use the above tips to remain productive.
